Laser Surgery and Safety

Training in the use of diode lasers can be provided to maximise the use of the laser you currently use or to help you make an informed choice when you decide to purchase one. Dominic currently uses three lasers from different manufacturers.

Large Animal Castration Techniques

Training can be provided in the correct use of the Henderson Castration Tool and Newbury knife. This method, widely used in the United States and other countries, is superior to many techniques used to castrate cattle and small ruminants. It is also regularly used to castrate horses in the US. It is a closed castration where the testicles are removed, but the anatomy is sealed without using a ligature. When used correctly, reduced post-op haemorrhage is seen, especially internal bleeding, along with faster recovery and improved live weight gains.

The Henderson tool is excellent for castrating cattle unsuccessfully castrated via Burdizzo. Profuse haemorrhage can occur when castrating these animals via conventional open castration techniques; the ability of the Henderson to tie off the vaginal and parietal tunics is the keep to its success. There should be no pulling, and the structures should break outside the abdomen, not inside; therefore, the potential for internal bleeding is not a feature of this method.

This ability to tie off the cord without the need for a ligature reduces bleeding without the potential of a foreign body reaction.
