Photothermal Chemotherapy
Emundo® is a formulation based on infracyanine green (IFCG) which is a non-toxic dye used diagnostics, ophthalmology and dermatology applications. Emundo® is a laser activated photo sensitiser that delivers antibacterial treatment for a multiple of dermatological, oral and dental conditions.
The Emundo® dye is applied either topically and/or is injected into the lesion of concern. A specific laser is used that operates at a specific wavelength to activate the dye. The laser operates at a very low power which has the advantage that only the tissue cells containing the dye are affected meaning that there is little to no damage to the surrounding healthy tissue.
Photothermal therapy (PTT) with Emundo® starts where traditional laser surgery stops. Emundo® therapy either in conjunction with laser surgery or on its has proven particularly effective in the treatment of equine squamous cell carcinomas (SSC) and various other skin tumour diseases such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and, although early days, it may reduce the recurrence of equine sarcoids when used in conjunction with traditional laser surgery.
Examples of Photothermal Chemotherapy (PPT)
Treatment of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with laser surgery and photothermal therapy (PPT)
Squamous cell carcinoma on the foreskin of penis of a pony
Emundo® dye being applied to affected area
Activation of Emundo® via the laser
Post-op wound healing well after three weeks
